The Game Pulse – Timing Game Events and Music Events [PDF]

Here’s a pointer to a paper in which we examine how to design nonlinear music systems that allow for music events to coincide and correspond with dynamically changing game events. We address the challenges of connecting nonlinear music systems to gameplay and distinguish three approaches for timing time music events and game events: Trail, Sync and Lead. We explore these three approaches in the design case study Gluddle versus The Supervision, a game created by the authors. Our preliminary findings illustrate the benefits of combining Trail, Sync and Lead, positively influencing the game experience, but also the need for extra attention to gameplay balance and technical implementation.

Dutch lecturers give Boot Camp in Game Design: VietJam Game Jam in Vietnam

I just returned from the Vietjam! Game Jam – a game jam event we organised! We were on the Vietnam national television. Thanks everyone, it was so great!

Dutch Senior lecturers Sander Huiberts and Richard van Tol from the Utrecht School of the Arts, the Netherlands will work with a group of students of FPT-Arena Ho Chi Minh City from November 5-9 and FPT-Arena Hanoi from November 12-16 in a Game Design Boot Camp. Part of this Boot Camp, which is a combination of theory and practice, will be a 48 hours Game Jam.

A property of Gluddle is the innovative use of sound in the game. It uses an adaptive music system that not only responds to what is happening in the game, but even controls part of the gameplay. Many events, such as the flashing of the Supervision, are timed to the beat of the music. This creates a musical flow that immerses the player in the game and allows for special tactics to be used, if the player pays a close ear.
